Kesi is a traditional Chinese silk-tapestry making method. This antique 17th century tapestry is decorated with cranes and clouds. When assuming an horizontal elongated shape with auspicious symbols such as the egrets they could probably be used as sutra (sacred text) covers.
"Kesi" means "cut silk", as the technique uses short lengths of weft thread that are tucked into the textile. Each color is woven from a separate bobbin and the interruption of the weft remains visible at a point of colour transition, causing the textile to appear as if carved by an incision.
