Michelangelo: The Last Decades

This must-see exhibition on the final decades of Michelangelo’s life offers a unique look into the artist’s personality. The first exhibition under the appointment of the British Museum’s new director, Nicholas Cullinan, it triumphantly demonstrates that the last decades of Michelangelo’s life were anything but a decline. Check out this exhibition for a deeper understanding of the man behind the masterpieces, conveyed through Michelangelo's own words, including letters, poetry, and more.

Matisse: The Red Studio at Fondation Louis Vuitton

 

Fondation Louis Vuitton brings its audiences an exhibition dedicated to Matisse’s 1911 masterpiece, The Red Studio. This painting has been one of the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) highlights since its acquisition in 1949, and this month it is in Paris for all to see. This exhibition brings together artworks depicted in The Red Studio painting and also includes related paintings, drawings, and archival material.

Following his solo debut at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris last year, Marcin Rusak returns, this time at the Gallery’s New York location. Rusak mesmerizes his audiences with a  captivating exhibition centered around the powerful symbolism of plants, evoking memories of people, places, and the emotional reactions of those encounters. The Vas Florum series features unique floral compositions that have evolved into a contemporary herbarium, representing the artist’s subjective experiences as well as the larger essence of our contemporary existence.

NG200: Celebrating 200 Years of The National Gallery

Attend one of The National Gallery's many events and exhibitions in London, and across the UK, to celebrate the museum’s bicentenary. Of particular interest is NG200: 14th-century Siena, where Sienese art will be on full-scale display for the first time ever outside of Italy, and the opportunity to see an exciting redisplay of the entire National Gallery Collection at NG200: The Main Event.

Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

This year's Met Ball attendees will have the first look at Sleeping Beauties: an exhibition featuring exquisite, historical masterpieces representing the last four centuries of fashion. Through research, conservation analysis, and several technologies, the Institute reawakened the sensorial power of around 250 garments. Sleeping beauties no longer, visitors will embark on an immersive journey to smell, touch, and listen to these precious garments.

Houghton Hall: Dame Magdalene Odundo and Anthony Gormley

This summer Houghton Hall will present two outstanding exhibitions, an outdoor installation of 100 works by the eminent British sculptor, Anthony Gormley, and an exhibition by Dame Magdalene Odundo, the revered ceramic artist, which will showcase new and existing works spanning Odundo’s 30-year career. Gormley's haunting figures are dispersed throughout the stately home's grounds, while Odundo's works will inhabit Houghton’s spectacular State Rooms.

Sotheby’s Exhibition of Una Casa Una Vida: Collection Yolanda Eleta de Fierro

Sotheby’s presents Yolanda Eleta de Fierro’s personal collection from her residence in Madrid, designed by the renowned decorating firm Maison Jansen. Attend to see pieces from the elegant home, which reflects the well-traveled lifestyle of its owners, with English country house influences. A highlight of the collection is a Regency silver dining service by Paul Storr, which accompanies chinoiserie lacquered cabinets and other pieces typical of the Jansen style.

Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection at V&A

This exhibition of photographs from the famed collection of Sir Elton John and David Furnish presents over 300 rare prints from 140 photographers to tell the story of modern photography through the subjects of fashion, celebrity, reportage, and the male body. Photographs range from 1950 to the present and include fashion photographs by Horst P. Horst, Irving Penn, and Herb Ritts.

When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting

Originally on view in Cape Town, South Africa at the Zeitz MOCAA, this exhibition travels to Basel, bringing together 156 artists in a comprehensive show on Black figurative painting. With over 200 pieces by Black artists from Africa and the African Diaspora, from the 1920s to the present, this exhibition is also an opportunity to see works by famed, late artists like Jacob Lawrence in conversation with contemporary artists like Michael Armitage, Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Danielle McKinney.

Simone Leigh is one of the most in demand, successful artists today; and her moving, beautiful bronzes and ceramics of great heights prove why. The artist’s work reflects on the lived realities of Black women and champions their beauty and strength. This traveling exhibition is the first comprehensive survey of Leigh’s work, where LACMA presents approximately 20 years of the artist’s career.

Witness the transformation of the Guggenheim’s iconic interior in this reimagination of Jenny Holzer’s momentous 1989 installation at the Frank Lloyd-Wright-designed museum. Known for her unmistakable electronic signs, Holzer’s work will climb all six ramps of the museum’s rotunda. Even if you know the Guggenheim well, this exhibition will captivate viewers by transforming the museum as you know it.

The European Fine Art Fair (TEFAF), New York

The iconic art fair returns for its 10th edition in New York City. With one of the world's most vibrant and prestigious art markets as its setting, leading art dealers and exhibitors will present exceptional old master paintings, sculpture, antiquities, and curiosities at the Park Avenue Armory. Concurrently, TEFAF Online offers stories, lectures and panel discussions from the esteemed TEFAF community.

MedBodrum, Turkey

 

Exclusive: International art collector and owner of Bodrum's iconic Macakizi resort, Sahir Erozan, hosts the inaugural MedBodrum this May - a four-day festival that celebrates the Mediterranean lifestyle through gastronomy, art and sustainability. With a clear intent to put Bodrum on the international calendar, Erozan has curated an impressive programme of events, from musical performances by Skip Marley to feasts from Michelin-starred chef, Aret Sahakyan. "MedBodrum will also contribute to the global dialogue on sustainability," Erozan tells Cabana, with Sunday's guests invited to partake in 'Bay Cleaning' with the Mediterranean Preservation Society.

The leading art fair will take place in The Shed in New York this year, representing over 60 galleries from 25 countries. A new curator takes the helm for Focus, Frieze’s highly respected section for young galleries, including Central Galeria and Mitre Galeria from Brazil. More than half of Frieze’s 2024 participants are New York-based, but are joined by eagerly-awaited galleries like LA’s Sow & Tailor and Shulamit Nazarian galleries, and San Francisco’s Micki Meng gallery.

Chanel Cruise 2025 Collection

Chanel will show its Cruise 2025 collection in Marseille early this May to highlight the city’s energy and cultural vitality. In a change of scenery from Chanel’s last show in Los Angeles, Chanel returns to the South of France to present its newest collection. The house’s choice to stage their latest show in Marseille is part of a larger experiment to move away from traditionally glamorous locations, as we saw with Chanel’s Métiers d’Art show in Manchester last December.

The Grand Tourist 10th Season Celebration at KASMIN

In just its second edition, the emerging De Renava Biennale has forged significant partnerships, including one with the Centre Pompidou, bringing a curated selection of artworks to the breathtaking Mediterranean city of Bonifacio. South of Corsica, Bonifacio becomes a site of artistic and cultural exploration during the biennale, where the historical citadel hosts artworks by internationally renowned and local artists. Close to twenty artists are invited to explore this year’s theme, “Roma Amor: The Fall of Empires,” delving into the nuanced concept of empire.

London Craft Week

For lovers of exceptional craftsmanship and creativity, the multitude of events happening as part of London Craft Week are not to be missed. Among them, Hand & Lock, embroiderers to the British royal family, invite the public to learn about Britain’s oldest embroidery house; Sabina Savage hosts an event at the Royal Academy of Arts on the artistry behind her hand-drawn illustrations, printed on silk and cashmere scarfs; and Sarah Davis tours the interiors of Two Temple Place, a neo-Gothic wonder built for William Waldorf Astor in the 1890s.

Join Design Miami for its inaugural edition of DESIGN MIAMI. LA, presented in the Holmby Hills estate designed by Paul R. Williams. The three-acre estate will present collectible design galleries, hand-selected historic and contemporary furniture, lighting, and objets d’art, highlight LA's role as an international arbiter of taste.

The Monterosso Lemon Festival

If you happen to be in Cinque Terre in mid May, head to Monterosso to indulge in their Festa del Limone. During the festival, the village’s narrow streets become lined with lemon decorations. You can taste the offerings from lemon producers who display their products and compete for best decorated window. The festival, bathed in vibrant yellows and greens, seems as charming as can be.
