My Favorite Place to Stay: The Grand Chalet

When I’m in Gstaad, I stay at my home, but I know The Grand Chalet is very comfortable. It sits up on a hill overlooking the village and is quiet and slightly set apart from the bigger, grander hotels. It has an excellent restaurant and marvelous views; it’s the cozy alternative to the bustle elsewhere.

My Favorite Restaurant: Sonnenhof

The amazing view and truly excellent delicate food make a visit to this hidden-away restaurant looking down towards the valley a truly Swiss experience. The efficient and elegant service are in the true tradition of local hospitality.

My Favorite Cozy Pub or Bar: Posthotel Rössli

This mainstay in the center of the village remains today as it has been forever, retaining the atmosphere that Gstaad once had in the past. The menu is simple and comforting and the family-run ambience makes it a favorite place for me at all times of the day.

My Favorite Coffee Shop or Café: Le Cafe du Cerf in Rougemont

This tiny old café-restaurant is a favorite place to eat fondue, or sausages, or simply have an excellent cappuccino. Its old wooden interior is like stepping back in time, though they have also created a new spectacular room upstairs, which is a great place for bigger groups.

My Favorite Antique Shop: Urs von Unger

Urs’s stylish shop in an ancient building on the Main Street in Saanen is filled with interesting contemporary and antique pieces for furnishing a chalet. You will find all kinds of exceptional and unusual things that Urs puts together with his careful eye.

My Favorite Food Shop: Pernet

This exceptional food shop has a huge selection of excellent foods from all over the world. It is a tiny ‘Harrods Fool hall’ in the mountains with extremely high quality vegetables, cheeses, and dried meats. You will always find what you need.

My Favorite Gallery: Menus Plaisirs, Galerie Caroline Freymond

Caroline Freymond’s exceptional taste is shown [at Menus Plaisirs] through the unusual selection of international artists of all ages, some well-known and others not. Works on display include painting, sculpture, and jewellery. Discovering Caroline’s unique pieces is always inspiring.

My Favorite Hike: A walk along the Sarine River

A brisk walk through the woods along the Sarine river is always special – invigorating, while absorbing fresh mountain air and taking in the snowy peaks.

My Favorite Hidden Treasure: Launensee

An exceptional walk around this small protected lake, a few kilometers out of town. You will feel revived, appreciating the natural beauty of the Swiss landscape at all times of the year.

My Favorite Thing to Do in Gstaad: Long walks and skiing

When the snow is freshly fallen, nothing beats an early start on the slopes before the crowds arrive. Gstaad is lucky to have many different ski options and, on some days, you can find that you have a whole mountain to ski, just to yourself. It’s truly unique and blissful.
