Chocolate Cake

Make sure you have a simple but delicious chocolate cake recipe up your sleeve. Wether it is served for afternoon tea or after a meal, this recipe is always a hit. We’ve been serving it in my house for as long as I can remember and it’s so easy to make that anyone can do it. 



  • 200g dark chocolate

  • 100g unsalted butter 

  • 150g caster sugar

  • 1/2 cup whole milk 

  • 4 eggs 

  • Double cream / Vanilla ice cream (optional)

  • Circular 20cm cake tin 



  • Pre-heat the over to 180°C.

  • Line your cake tin with baking paper

  • While the oven is pre-heating, melt the butter and dark chocolate together using a bain-marie.

  • Crack the eggs in a bowl and separate the yolks and whites.

  • Mix the caster sugar and egg yolks together in a bowl. 

  • In a separate bowl whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. 

  • Slowly add the melted chocolate to the sugar and yolk mix, stirring as you go. 

  • Add the egg whites to the mixture

  • Pour the batter into the cake tin and bake for 20-30 minutes 

  • When the cake comes out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes and then top with icing sugar.

  • Served with freshly whipped cream or vanilla ice cream
