Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy

'Bashi-Bazouk', Jean-Léon Gérôme (French, Vesoul 1824–1904, Paris), 1868–69 Medium: Oil on canvas © The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
From Napoleon’s 1798 Egypt campaign to the ateliers of Ingres, Delacroix, and Gérôme, the Met’s Orientalism: Between Fact and Fantasy unpacks how “the East” was constructed through travel, observation, and imagination. Paintings sit alongside textiles, arms, ceramics, and architectural fragments, tracing how Orientalism permeated European design, taste, and museum culture within imperial, colonial, and commercial contexts.

The first exhibition devoted to the unexpected chromatic world of Barbara Hepworth; one of Britain’s most defining modernist sculptors. From painted stone carvings and stringed forms to rarely seen works on paper, this exhibition traces a practice where blue, red and mineral tones become extensions of landscape, sea and air rather than surface decoration.

Charting the transformation of Chinese women’s dress from Qing dynasty robes to the streamlined elegance of the qipao and cheongsam, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art explores fashion as a language of identity, migration, and modernity. Drawing on over 70 garments, the exhibition reveals how women across China and the diaspora negotiated social change through silhouette, textile, and adornment.
