New York-based designer Ulla Johnson has carved out a unique place in fashion with her globally inspired designs that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern sensibilities. Growing up in Manhattan as the daughter of archaeologists, her early exposure to diverse cultures and crafts instilled in her a love for intricate details and natural fibers – elements that have become emblematic of her eponymous brand.
Established in 1998, her label has become a global favorite for its timeless aesthetic and commitment to quality; vibrant colors, layered textures, and a bohemian spirit typify Ulla's statement pieces, which draw inspiration from her travels and the artisans with whom she collaborates. Beyond fashion, she embraces her roots and family life in Brooklyn, where her brand’s flagship store is located.
Just ahead of the holidays, Ulla Johnson and Cabana have joined forces once more, creating a limited-edition tabletop collaboration. Featuring the Tree of Life tablecloth in 100% linen, each handcrafted piece speaks to a shared vision of elegance and encapsulates the joy of gathering and hosting. To mark the beginning of the party season, Ulla shares her personal tips for elegant, effortless entertaining.
How do you create atmosphere and mood when hosting at home?
Great music, flowing drinks and candlelight.
How do you make your tables stand out?
Embrace florals as your centerpiece – the wilder the better.
Are there any personal touches you rely on, such as personalised place names or menus?
I’m a collector by nature, so I love to lay a table with items gathered from near and far, old and new. Always with a hand-painted place card at each seating by the exuberant hand of Bernard Maisner.
A seated dinner or pre-dinner drinks party, what's your preference?
I’m happiest when we have a full table at home so a seated dinner, with abundant candlelight - there is no better lighting as far as I’m concerned.
Any failsafe tips for the nervous or reluctant host?
Dress up. Don’t be distraught by a broken glass (or two) – my mother always said it was good luck. And never skip on serving dessert!
Three words you would use to describe your hosting style?
Festive, thoughtful and, I hope - fun!
