Francisco de Corcuera: Tangier Enigma is showing at Robilant + Voena, Dover Street, London, until 2 August 2024

At Robilant + Voena’s London gallery, acclaimed interior decorator Roberto Peregalli joined forces with designer Luca Stoppini to host a private view of their co-curated presentation, Francisco de Corcuera: Tangier Enigma.

The exhibition, on show until 2 August, presents a selection of beguiling works by multi-faceted Chilean artist, Francisco de Corcuera. Along with the artist’s well recognised abstract paintings, the exhibition highlights are de Corcuera's never-before-seen portraits, which attracted art lovers for the summer show's opening.

Regular visitors to Robilant + Voena might have been pleasantly surprised to see the gallery’s temporary new design, realised by Mr Peregalli. The imposing rooms were covered in bold and dramatic black fabric, evoking the mystique of old-world Tangier and the alluring charm of the artist’s sprawling house in the Medina.

Notable guests, including John and Darcy Rigas, celebrated Italian photographer Priscilla Rattazzi and Studio Pergalli co-founder, Laura Sartori Rimini, admired de Corcuera’s mesmerising geometric works, as did painter and rising star Stephen Appleby-Barr and distinguished writers James Reginato and François-Olivier Rousseau.

Francisco de Corcuera, who celebrates his 80th birthday this year and exudes a traditional, whimsical charm, welcomed guests with explanations of his enigmatic portraits. Intertwining elements of European and South American cultures, the works were displayed publicly for the first time in an emotional moment for the artist. These stood alongside his abstract geometric paintings, shown across the Americas.

Close by were Luca Stoppini - founder of Luca Stoppini Studio and former artistic director of Vogue Italia – and Roberto Peregalli, who with Laura Sartori Rimini founded Studio Peregalli (and were the minds behind designs for the likes of John Currin and Paolo Zegna). Together with Marco Voena, the pair worked to bring forth the seductive atmosphere of Tangier’s charm, transforming the London gallery for the evening.
