Renowned costume designer Sandy Powell CBE remains a distinctly original voice in an increasingly homogenous world. Her sharp instinct took her from South London to Hollywood where she has now worked solidly for nearly five decades, dressing actors in more than 50 critically acclaimed films. She talks to Sophie Goodwin for Issue 25. The full interview appears in the new issue, available now.

Sandy Powell photographed with Derek Jarman in 1985, on the set of Carravaggio.
Sandy Powell was 16 when she walked into a performance of Flowers by Lindsay Kemp and had her world rearranged. She pursued the British dancer and actor with the glorious arrogance of youth, showing him her costume design sketches at a Pineapple dance studio class, before travelling to Barcelona that summer. She never went back to complete her studies. Not long after, she cold-called the celebrated filmmaker Derek Jarman. The rest is cinema.

"How lucky I was to have [them] as mentors. I relentlessly pursued them. I remember thinking I want a piece of that and went to get it. Such is the arrogance of youth!" she tells Cabana.

From there, Sandy's star soared; she began working with more and more visionary directors on a variety of critically acclaimed films. To date, she has designed the costumes for over 50 motion pictures spanning five decades. From Sally Potter's Orlando (1992) and John Madden's Shakespeare in Love (1998), to Martin Scorsese's The Aviator (2004) and The Irishman (2019) and Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite (2018), Sandy's hand and eye for drama is unmistakable.

It's earned her three Academy Awards and 15 nominations to date.
She has also won four BAFTA awards, including the 2023 Fellowship — the first ever awarded to a costume designer — and was recently honored with a CBE.

Entirely uninterested in blockbuster franchises, Sandy is always faithful to her instincts.
"The challenges don’t get easier, but with age and experience I am less intimated. I know now not to panic, I know what I am talking about," she says.
