From a fuchsia drapery in a 15th-century Normandy villa to a powder-pink bathroom in the British countryside and Lee Radziwill’s New York magenta dining room, pink has played a significant role in interiors across various eras and styles. Pink occupies a particular place in the history of decoration, tied to both courtly rituals and domestic decorating. In the 18th century, Marie Antoinette adopted it as a cultivated interior shade across patterned frocks and monogrammed upholstery. Equally symbolic was the movement of Chintz, where floral fuchsias, such as Mario Buatta’s ruffles, took hold. More recently, posy pinks have garnered a new place in interior design thanks to the likes of Barbie (2023) and Palme Royale (2024), the latter depicting Palm Beach

Public taste-makers have also crowned the color a must-have in the home. Pastel patinas in the New York home of Lee Radziwill and Swedish home of Karin Larsson teach us a lesson in using this shade for embellishment, while, most notably, 'Queen of Pink' Dame Barbara Cartland left a legacy of decorating and dressing with the bold shade.

Interior designers, artists and editors have duly followed suit for centuries, dreaming up pink schemes and scenes as various as the shade itself – proving that pink is neither predictable nor childish, but rather a multi-faceted color for the ages.

In a former casa di ringhiera in Milan’s Cinque Vie, Idarica Gazzoni has created a nomadic, memory layered interior shaped by ikat silks, antique campaign furniture and hand painted walls. “Leading me into the ikat billow of her bedchamber, lined with the Uzbek-inspired fabric that once covered her Bologna dining room. Purposely kept billowing, like the folds of a courtesan’s gown, the effect is startling and nomadic and conjures a fitting reverie in the dusk light,” writes Cosmo Brockway. Tour the house.

"A 19th-century mansion behind huge imposing doors and left uninhabited for decades, Casapiane feels frozen in time. It was here in Bordeaux that Cécile d’Amade Briant fell under its charm and knew it would make the most atmospheric setting for her intriguing business," writes Joanna Maclennan. Plucking palettes from Victorian colorways, the plush peaches and pinks are a fitting backdrop for the room's exclusively female portraits – one depicting Charles II's mistresses, another a Peter Lely masterpiece of Weston's visionary owner, Lady Elizabeth.

Min Hogg's Canary Islands home, featured in Haute Bohemians, embodies the legendary editor's love of imperfection - a place where timeworn patinas, delicate pinks, leafy greens, and cool blues create a sense of faded elegance.
