Silk Roads at the British Museum

An extraordinary exhibition at the British Museum seeks to expand the over-simplified notions many have of the Silk Roads, the ancient trade network that spanned Asia, Africa, and Europe. The major exhibition examines how the journeys of people, objects, and ideas shaped cultures and histories, giving visitors the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding "beyond images of camel caravans crossing desert dunes and merchants trading silks and spices at bazaars". Highlights include objects from Uzbekistan and Tajikistan that have never been seen in the UK, underlining the importance of Central Asia to the Silk Roads story.

The Holburne Museum brings together works by Francisco de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828) and Paula Rego (1935–2022), two artists who lived a century apart yet both created work around the concept of the uncanny. While Goya portrayed the absurdity of social norms, Rego depicted the ruthlessness of childhood verses. On display for the first time are a selection of Goya etchings owned by Rego and hung around her bed; this deeply personal tie between the two artists adds a moving layer to the exhibition.
