Gstaad has long attracted an eclectic group of 'habitués', sophisticated globetrotters who have chosen the charming Swiss village as their annual holiday or yearlong spot. This is reflected in Gstaad's exciting events, festivals, and parties throughout the year, says Gstaad regular, Fabrizia Caracciolo. She shares insider's tips for a memorable weekend.

Sitting amid the peaks of the Bernese Oberland Alps, Gstaad and its surroundings epitomize the most exquisite gentleness of Swiss sceneries. In contrast to some of Switzerland's breathtaking landscapes, such as St. Moritz or Zermatt, this valley is reassuringly mellow, velvety, and mild.

Gstaad has long attracted globetrotters who choose this charming Swiss village as their annual holiday or yearlong spot. These “habitués” are diverse, eclectic and cosmopolitan, offering a fascinating mix of interesting individuals in one place. Throughout the year, there are always exciting events, festivals, and parties, ensuring a flow of stimulating entertainment.

Where to Stay

The Palace Hotel: Perched at the top of the hill, The Palace is undeniably the symbol of Gstaad. As an institution, and for a long time the epicenter of Gstaad's social life, guests can enjoy everything from breakfast to late-night hours at the nightclub Greengo without ever needing to leave the hotel. The Palace’s restaurants are equally delightful; you can savor the perfect filet or entrecôte with pommes frites at The Grill, or indulge in the best fondue at the Fromagerie.

The Olden: This charming institution, located on the central promenade of the village, is elegant, beautifully preserved, and offers impeccable service. The green boiseries and soft pink linens make the bar the most charming and lively place to enjoy lunch or dinner.

The Grand Chalet: For a more private, family-run, cozy atmosphere that’s slightly off the beaten path, consider The Grand Chalet for your stay.

Where to Eat

Rossli: I equally adore both Rossli restaurants in the area. The Post Rossli in Gstaad itself is part of one of the oldest and most charming hotels on the promenade, boasting a classic ambiance complete with charming waitresses in dirndls and a traditional old stube adorned with hunting trophies.

The Rossli in Feutersoey is now run by a lovely young couple, and both the decor and the food are delightful!

Le Seize: Le Seize in Saanen is the liveliest spot, in a beautifully traditional old wooden chalet in the center of the village. The owner offers traditional cuisine with a modern twist, utilizing the best local and sustainably sourced products.

Sonnenhof: For stunning views and the finest gourmet cuisine in the valley, head to Sonnenhof at the top of Saanen. Its terrace on a sunny day is simply dreamy!

Where to Shop

La Verand’Anne: One of the oldest, most refined home decor boutiques in the valley, whose owners have exquisite taste. It has recently relocated to Saanen.

Marina Anouilh: Marina is undoubtedly the queen of elegance and refinement in Gstaad. Here you'll find the finest selection of fashion and home decor.

The Flower Shop: This pop-up store, run by Paola and Marie, features a rotating selection of the best brands on the market.

Tivoli and Nilufar Gallery: Located right next to the Flower Shop, this gallery displays beautiful and colorful shearling pieces from Milanese maisons alongside stunning design items from the prestigious gallery.

The Chocolate Shop: For the best hot chocolate and “tarte aux pommes”.

Librairie des Alpages: Pop to this shop in Saanen for the best selection of books, and helpful advice from the knowledgeable owners.

What to See & Do

Lunch at the Lakes: Walking to and around the valley’s lakes is always a delight. Visit Arnensee, Lauenensee, or Geltenhorn, and enjoy lunch at one of their charming huts. If you’re in the mood for a more challenging hike, head to the Geltenhütte at the edge of the Wildhorn glacier.

Museums & Galleries: Don’t miss the Pays d’En Haut Museum of Paper Cut in Château-d’Oex, one of Switzerland's main folk art museums. Housed in the “Maison du Préfet Cottier,” the museum exhibits objects preserved by those passionate about the history and customs of this unique corner of the country.
