There's no denying that January can feel like December's underwhelming encore, despite the promise of a New Year. To combat the post-Christmas blues, Team Cabana has curated a bumper list of events and exhibitions worldwide to remind you the art and design world has much to be excited about this month - from Maison&Objet in Paris and the Winter Show in New York, to the plethora of new and 'last chance to see' exhibitions. Versailles: Science and Splendour

Versailles: Science and Splendour dazzles with over 120 remarkable objects that reveal how the French monarchy married science and spectacle to assert power in the 16th and 18th-centuries. From Louis XIV’s hydraulic engineering "projects" in the gardens, to Marie Antoinette’s legendary Breguet watch, the exhibition unveils a world where opulence met innovation.
Highlights include Madame du Coudray’s pioneering obstetrics mannequin, the mesmerizing Pendule de la Création du Monde (depicted above), and even Louis XV’s pampered rhinoceros. With treasures on loan from the Palace of Versailles, this show offers a fascinating glimpse into a court where scientific curiosity flourished amid royal grandeur.

Discover the groundbreaking artistry of George Hoyningen-Huene, an icon who redefined fashion photography with his elegant compositions and surrealist touch. George Hoyningen-Huene: Glamour e Avanguardia invites you to the aptly glamorous Palazzo Reale in Milan for an extraordinary journey with over 100 images that shaped haute couture in the 1920s and ’30s.
Curated by Susanna Brown, this first-ever Italian retrospective reveals Huene's timeless aesthetic. From the lavish stages of Paris to the allure of golden-age cinema, explore a legacy that transformed photography into true visual poetry – think Man Ray, Chanel, and Hollywood’s brightest stars.

CY TWOMBLY

Visit Gagosian’s Madison Avenue gallery and you’ll be treated to a very special exhibition of works by Cy Twombly, including never-before-seen loans from the Twombly family. Featuring the artist's oeuvre over a 22-year period, the installation will showcase his evolving style, from austere ‘blackboard’ paintings of the late 1960s, to his atmospheric green paintings from the 1980s.
Produced at Twombly’s Bassano home in Teverina, Italy, these latter works show his exploration of color, the liquidity of paint and abstract elemental meetings. You’ll also see paintings referring Titian portraits, vibrant floral abstractions and a suite of works - inspired by Twombly’s travels through Russia, Afghanistan and Central Asia - now reunited for the first time in over 40 years.

Gladiators of Britain: A British Museum Partnership Exhibition

A touring exhibition in partnership with the British Museum, this fascinating show will reveal the most enduring aspects and antiquities of Roman gladiatorial culture, from important objects - including a 2000-year-old bronze helmet - to the stories of key players who performed to the baying crowds.
Highlights include the Colchester Vase, and the only confirmed piece of gladiatorial armour from Roman Britain, both of which reveal the popularity of gladiators throughout Roman society.

Moore and Malaparte Rhythm and Form

Opening at Gagosian's Rue de Castiglione gallery in Paris, this fascinating exhibition will juxtapose the great Henry Moore's freeform sculptures and drawings with furniture from the architectural masterpiece, Casa Malaparte on the island of Capri, designed by modernist architect Adalberto Libera.
This inspired dialogue celebrates the pair's shared obsession with organic forms and harmonious spaces and promises to be a real must-see.

Du Cœur à la Main : Dolce&Gabbana

This winter, the Grand Palais welcomes Du Cœur à La Main: Dolce&Gabbana (From the Heart to the Hands: Dolce&Gabbana), a stunning tribute to Italian craftsmanship and Alta Moda. A world where fashion meets culture, in an exhibition that enchanted Milan and is set to dazzle Paris, the showcase will feature over 200 extraordinary one-of-a-kind creations, revealing the journey of the fashion empire’s ouvre; from idea to realization.
Curated by Florence Müller and brought to life with scenography by Agence Galuchat, ten immersive rooms will exhibit the brand's playful elegance, sensuality, and homage to “la dolce vita,” alongside collaborations with visual artists that deepen the dialogue between fashion and art.

Iconic: Portraiture from Francis Bacon to Andy Warhol

Rarely-seen works by some of the most important artists of the 20th-century, including Francis Bacon, Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol, will go on show at the Holburne Museum in Bath from 24 January. The exhibition seeks to explore the ways these masters have used, and been inspired by, photography, with a particular focus on the 1960s and photographic portraits of celebrities.

Hans Coper: Resurface

Three rare murals and more than 20 pots, all made by the celebrated ceramicist Hans Coper, will go on display this month, for the first and only time. The exhibition will show rarely-seen items from the studio potter’s oeuvre, including clay prints, the mould for an acoustic wall tile and a large, incised plaster panel, alongside candid photographs of Coper taken by his wife, Jane, in his studio.
After fleeing Nazi Germany as a young man and settling in the UK, Saxony-born Coper would go on to become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, described not as a potter, “but an artist”, by his friend and mentor, the equally renowned ceramicist, Lucie Rie. Known for his complex, incised patterns, Coper bridged the gap between pottery and sculpture.

Contemporary British painters Sir Christopher Le Brun (b. 1951) and Charlotte Verity (b. 1954) met at the Slade in 1974 and married in 1979. Curated by Robin Vousden, this expansive exhibition of both artists' works - which exhibit their deep understanding of color and sensitivity to the natural world - is a rare chance to see their paintings side by side during their first joint show in the USA.

Paula Modersohn-Becker: I Am Me

The Art Institute of Chicago and Neue Galerie New York have curated the first museum retrospective of the trailblazing artist, Paula Modersohn-Becker, in the United States. With over 50 paintings, 15 striking large-scale drawings and five etchings, this landmark exhibition traces the brief yet profound life and career of an artist who redefined the feminine experience in art. Celebrated for her groundbreaking self-portraits – including the first nude self-portraits known to have been made by a woman – and her poignant depictions of childhood, motherhood, and age, Modersohn-Becker’s bold vision and expressive style place her among the pioneers of modern art. An ode to self-determination, the exhibition’s title echoes her declaration: “I Am Me—and hope to become that more and more.”

Maison&Objet’s January 2024 edition, with its theme Sur/Reality, ushers in a new era of surrealism, where fantasy, whimsy, and unpredictability collide to form exciting and curious landscapes of creativity. In collaboration with Peclers Paris, this vibrant exploration takes inspiration from the great Surrealists, like Magritte and Dalí, yet firmly grounds itself in the present, blending the absurd and digital with innovative, often humorous, designs. The Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville is an annual benefit that brings together a stunning array of antiques, landscaped gardens, and horticultural treasures from exhibitors across the US. Ceramic brussels returns for its second chapter at the striking Tour&Taxis.
